reBlog from florentpeyre.net: Social media in NY

I found this fascinating quote today:

Upon the sharing of a friend on Facebook (ahhh… the power of social recommendation…), I discovered a new service called  in Flavors.me which enables anyone to build a personalized page on himself or anyone else and then link to it the main social content production factories. They currently carry 14 services including Facebook, Tumblr but also your DVD queue from Netflix, your checkins from Foursquare or the last tracks you’ve been listening on Last.fm. Once you’ve added all services, the user coming to your page can click on the services you’ve added and a window will display whatever stream of activity you’ve had on that specific service. Testing it yesterday, I mechanically added all the services I’m using including Netflix and Foursquare. Once I realized that everybody could then follow my physical traces around NY through Foursquare or all photos that I posted to Facebook (and where these only get displayed to a selected list of people), I freaked out and decided to limit that to only the safer LinkedIn and other Twitter feeds.florentpeyre.net, Social media in NY, Feb 2010

Techcrunch Story: Avatar Is Like The iPhone Of Movies

Totally agree with Michael Arrington on Avatar - it's a game changer for special effects and will hopefully inspire the next generation of App Builders to think much much bigger and build out amazing 3-D worlds as soon as that's possible. I would go see it again any day now to take another 3-hour holiday in alternate reality aka IMAX 3-D. Avatar Is Like The iPhone Of Movies

AVATAR is an amazing movie

Just saw Avatar tonight at the 3-D IMAX on 34th street - what a fantastic movie. The story is entertaining, somewhat predictable yet not boring. The images and the special effects (Navis, animals, trees, plants, technology) are just stunning! Especially the first hour of the movie just flies by.
I'm hoping that Cameron or someone else will turn this into a true 3-D immersive gaming experience soon - might be possible to hang out on planet Pandora in a MMOG in a few years- let's hope so. In the meantime, hit the IMAX in 3-D or if you can afford it, the Hawaiian jungle! Cudos to James Cameron for a fantastic, boundary-pushing movie!

A food walk on the west side of Chelsea

My friend Shakti and I went for a little impromptu food walk from Chelsea market to Penn Station yesterday. For posterity, here are the results:

View West Chelsea Food Walk in a larger map

I highly recommend the sweet snacks at Three Tarts - try the blood orange goat cheese Panna Cotta. And to wrap it up - make sure you visit the new Highline park for some excellent views of the city and a glimpse into the Equinox Yoga studio at the Caledonia building. This picture shows the view up 10th Avenue from the little "theatre" they've built into the highline park. Nice job, NYC!

Get your wingsuit and go for a flight

Day 252/365Image by ~jjjohn~ via Flickr

Great Ted Talk by Ueli Gegenschatz - enjoy the flight (if you're impatient, go to minute 5:50 to only see the flying action. It's a nice gesture by Ted to release the videos for free this year.

Future of social networks presentation by Charlene Li

This is a good overview about some aspects of the future of social networks by Charlene Li. I enjoyed the part on the open stack vs. facebook connect but thought the part about revenue was a bit weak - no real groundbreaking thinking there. Having just implemented Facebook Connect at Takkle (free registration required), I agree that it's going to be a key piece of any 2009 content/social site - it's just too good to pass up on. Also check out Glue which could be an interesting way to span the networks.
