Here's an interesting attempt by Bebo to activate their users and get them to nominate themselves and get other users to vote for them. It's called Bebo Darwin and assigns a status to users who manage to get their friends to vote for them. It appeals to two of the fundamentals of social networking: narcissism (people want to show off their status) and user participation (in this case: voting). I'd be curious about the results for this kind of initiative.
